Lorenzo Pagni, in arte Pugni, nasce a Pisa il 19/06/1993. Sin da piccolo dimostra una naturale tendenza al canto e alla musica, che sviluppa ed affina grazie ai dischi del padre.
Lorenzo si avvicina allo studio della musica a 11 anni, suonando la batteria come primo strumento, che nel corso degli anni sostituisce con la chitarra per poter avere più possibilità espressive. Nonostante l’amore per la musica, la principale attività di Lorenzo è per anni lo sport. Passa le giornate in canoa, sorretto dall’acqua e circondato dagli alberi del suo caro fiume Arno, ripetendo e affinando lo stesso gesto milioni di volte. Negli anni colleziona ottimi risultati a livello italiano e internazionale, rappresentando anche l’Italia ai campionati europei e mondiali.
Parallelamente, dall’età di 16 anni inizia ad esibirsi nei locali, suonando la batteria, la chitarra e cantando. La musica rimane sempre con lui, ma è una cosa troppo bella che non riesce a concedersi totalmente. Lo sport, la competizione e lo studio occupano la stragrande maggioranza della sua vita, per anni. Il suo senso del dovere è il suo principale limite. Col tempo, però, si accorge di quanto sia ampio il divario tra i suoi desideri e le sue azioni quotidiane. In un lento percorso di consapevolizzazione, la pagaia viene sostituita totalmente dalla chitarra e Lorenzo inizia a scrivere canzoni. Ma è ancora lungo il percorso che lo porterà a far sentire quello che scrive. Le sue canzoni rimangono segretamente nascoste in camera sua per anni. Nel frattempo Pugni inizia a lavorare nei locali notturni come barman, musicista e dj e recupera la mondanità e il divertimento perso durante l’adolescenza, forse pure troppo. Si esibisce facendo della musica la sua fonte di guadagno, ma suona per lo più cover, cantando ogni tanto qualche canzone inedita, di quelle che non parlano di lui, di quelle scritte col freno a mano, che possano piacere all’ascolto, senza impegnare troppo. Nel 2018 entra in un gruppo di nome “Scarlett” con cui inizia a suonare in giro per l’Italia, con qualche uscita in Francia e Olanda. Con gli Scarlett produce qualche canzone che farà poi uscire col nome di Pugni una volta sciolto il gruppo.
Nel 2020 sente la necessità di cambiare posto dove stare. Saluta il fiume, il mare e i pescatori per spostarsi a Torino. È qua che Pugni inizia a esprimersi per quello che è. L’ambiente è molto più stimolante rispetto alla sua amata Pisa, tuttavia in un modo o in un altro è la sua città natale a dargli ancora qualcosa. L’incontro con Danny Bronzini (Jovanotti, Willie Peyote, Venerus), suo concittadino trasferitosi a Torino, è determinante nel proprio percorso di crescita artistica e nell’adozione di una visione matura del processo creativo. Danny, così come Kendo, produttore torinese con cui Pugni scrive e produce in grande sinergia, gli offrono nuovi stimoli che lo portano a liberarsi dalle proprie rigidità e a dare l’avvio a un processo di ricerca tutt’ora in corso. Parallelamente all’attività di musicista, Lorenzo si laurea in psicologia e inizia a lavorare come psicologo in una clinica psichiatrica, dove ascolta storie di vita al limite del credibile. La complessità delle persone che incontra gli fornisce il materiale emotivo per scrivere, che diventa non solo una necessità espressiva, ma un vero e proprio strumento terapeutico con cui poter esorcizzare il dolore.
Pugni ha selezionato 8 delle canzoni che ha scritto negli ultimi anni e le ha raccolte nel suo primo album in uscita nel 2024 con distribuzione Believe.
Pugni, born Lorenzo Pagni in Pisa on June 19, 1993, showed a natural inclination for singing and music from an early age, developing and refining it thanks to his father’s record collection.
He began studying music at 11, starting with drums as his first instrument, which he later replaced with the guitar to have greater expressive possibilities. Despite his love for music, for many years Lorenzo’s main focus was sports. He spent his days canoeing, supported by the water and surrounded by the trees of his beloved Arno River, repeating and refining the same movements millions of times. Over the years, he achieved excellent results at both the national and international levels, representing Italy in European and World Championships.
At the same time, from the age of 16, he began performing in clubs, playing drums and guitar and singing. Music was always with him, but it was something too precious to fully dedicate himself to. Sport, competition, and study occupied the vast majority of his life for years. His sense of duty was his main limitation. Over time, however, he realized how wide the gap was between his desires and his daily actions. In a slow process of self-awareness, the paddle was completely replaced by the guitar, and Lorenzo began writing songs. Yet the journey to sharing what he wrote was still long. His songs remained secretly hidden in his room for years. Meanwhile, Pugni started working in nightlife venues as a bartender, musician, and DJ, rediscovering the social life and fun he had missed during adolescence — perhaps too much. He performed music as a source of income, mostly playing covers, occasionally singing an original song — those written with the handbrake on, meant to be pleasant to listen to without revealing too much of himself.
In 2018, he joined a band called Scarlett, performing across Italy and with a few shows in France and the Netherlands. With Scarlett, he produced some songs that he would later release under the name Pugni once the band disbanded.
In 2020, he felt the need for a change of environment. He bid farewell to the river, the sea, and the fishermen and moved to Turin. It was here that Pugni began expressing himself authentically. The city was far more stimulating than his beloved Pisa, yet in one way or another, his hometown continued to inspire him. His encounter with Danny Bronzini (Jovanotti, Willie Peyote, Venerus), a fellow native who had moved to Turin, was pivotal for his artistic growth and the adoption of a mature vision of the creative process. Danny, along with Kendo, a Turin-based producer with whom Pugni writes and produces in great synergy, provided new stimuli that allowed him to break free from his rigidities and initiate a research process that continues to this day.
Alongside his musical career, Lorenzo graduated in psychology and began working as a psychologist in a psychiatric clinic, where he listened to stories of life at the edge of belief. The complexity of the people he encountered provided him with the emotional material to write, transforming music into not only a form of expression but a therapeutic tool to exorcise pain.
Pugni has selected eight songs he wrote over the past few years and compiled them into his first album, set for release in 2024 with distribution by Believe.
